The grim reality of online threats toward minors has become alarmingly high, so much so that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) reported a staggering 20.5 million CyberTipline reports in the past year—a 1,325% jump in reports involving generative AI, according to the Burleson Police Department's post.
The rise in digital dangers has led NCMEC to now average nearly 100 reports of financial sextortion daily. The urgency to combat this surge can no longer casually be understated; action is not just a necessity but a moral imperative. The department’s outreach is clear and articulate: "If we can save just one child from the mental, physical, and emotional trauma caused by monsters like this, then we'll talk about this topic until the end of the Earth," the Burleson Police Department stated in their post.
In tandem with their online efforts, the Burleson Police Department has organized an educational event named "Protecting Our Kids in a Digital World." The class aims to empower both parents and teens with knowledge and tools to navigate the intricate web of online safety. Scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, at 6:30 PM, the event will take place at the Burleson Recreation Center. The class is open to all, transcending the city boundaries and allowing parents and their teens to engage in critical discussions on mature topics related to internet safety, underscoring the need for parental guidance.
