In a recent crackdown on narcotics trafficking in Catawba County, Ta'Shawn Thomas Byrd, age 31, has been detained by local authorities. During a traffic stop initiated as part of an ongoing investigation last Wednesday, deputies discovered illegal substances and weapons in Byrd’s possession. The deputies subsequently carried out a search of a nearby apartment, which led to further seizures, as reported by WBTV.
The QC News detailed the seizure from Byrd’s vehicle, which included approximately 291 grams of cocaine, two Draco firearms, and a pistol. During the subsequent warrant-authorized search of his Hickory apartment, a smaller amount of cocaine was found along with an additional Draco firearm and pistol. Byrd's bond was set at a significant $400,000 and he remains in custody at the Catawba County Detention Facility.
Byrd faces an array of felony charges including trafficking in cocaine by possession, trafficking in cocaine by transport, maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance, and carrying a concealed weapon. One count is particularly severe, possession of a weapon of mass destruction, which denotes the class of firearms found in his possession.
The WCNC clarifies that Byrd’s arrest was part of a broader strategy to combat drug trafficking in the area. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 24, in which the full spectrum of charges will be addressed. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has yet to provide extensive comments, but they confirmed that the investigations are still active and ongoing
