Residents of Centereach in Suffolk County are grappling with repeated thefts of holiday decorations, a spree that's casting a shadow over the festive season. A local family has experienced the disappearance of a beloved inflatable snowman and a large teddy bear from their front lawn, incidents captured on surveillance video and now under investigation by the police. According to ABC 7 New York, the alleged thefts befell the family twice within a single week.
Explaining the toll of these crimes, homeowner Rey Algodon told ABC 7 New York, "It's just sad because my daughters love it. The decorations, especially the big teddy bear, the snowman, that's what makes it sad." In response to the first incident, Algodon has tightened security around his property by adding more cameras, one with a view from a tree, and installing motion sensor lights. Making off with the decorations required some forethought; the thief brought a knife to cut the fishing line tethering them to the ground.
News 12 Long Island reports the two thefts occurred on November 8 and 12, respectively, as per Suffolk police investigations of the incidents on Daell Lane. The frequency and brazenness of such thefts have stirred community concern. A number of Centereach residents have recounted similar experiences, noting the theft of their inflatable decorations as far back as Halloween.
While the investigation continues, the family hopes to recover their festive inflatables, integral to their holiday tradition spanning over six years. Implementing the new security measures, Algodon has braced for further attempts, determined to protect the expressions of joy that adorn his family's front yard. The suspect, whom has been caught on camera, still prowls untamed – an unwelcome shadow over the communal spirit of Centereach's holiday season.
