In a significant legal development, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that 46-year-old Carolyn Tolin of Centereach has pleaded guilty to serious narcotics distribution charges for her activities on the dark web, where she went by the moniker "Mamaknowsbrown," according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. Tolin admitted to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree and Attempted Operating as a Major Trafficker, crimes that were facilitated by mailing drugs through various delivery services including the United States Postal Service, UPS, and Uber, and collecting payments in cryptocurrency.
From September 2024 to March 2025, Tolin operated a sophisticated narcotics enterprise out of her home's garage, managing to amass over $75,000 in sales of cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin; her dark web site, MamaKnowsBrown, became a hub for distributing these substances both to local buyers in Suffolk County and to those spread out across the country, "The scale of the operation that this defendant ran out of her Centereach garage is astounding,” said District Attorney Tierney, as reported by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. Customers were given shipping options, allowed to leave feedback, and could pay with cryptocurrency, which Tolin would then convert to cash, demonstrating both a customer-centric approach and a willingness to use emerging technologies for illicit transactions.
During the plea allocution, Tolin's operations were characterized by a touch of caution despite the illegal nature, as she included overdose warning cards within each package sent out, informing customers of the potency and risks associated with the narcotics, and advising them to keep Narcan on hand—a life-saving measure against opioid overdose. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office's statement detailed these overdose cards, which included warnings to not use alone and advice that her products were intended for only experienced users due to their strength.
The end for Tolin's operation came on March 14, 2025, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at her residence, uncovering a trove of illicit substances including fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine along with the materials and equipment for her dark web business, afterwards, Tolin was taken into custody and has remained there ever since being remanded without bail after her guilty plea, according to official sources. For her offenses, Tolin is now facing a 15-year prison sentence followed by 5 years of post-release supervision, her sentencing is scheduled for January 8, and her defense is being handled by Ian Fitzgerald, Esq.
Assistant District Attorneys Kristin Barnes and Matthew Laube of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau are prosecuting the case, with investigative work conducted by Richard Pedigo of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Fentanyl Task Force.
