Escalating concerns have been put to rest as the Ceres Police Department updated the public on a recently thwarted kidnapping case. Ceres Police Department reported on their Facebook page, an elderly woman sought help from staff at a Wells Fargo Bank last Thursday, claiming she was the victim of an attempted kidnapping. Responding officers arrested two individuals at the scene; a 33-year-old male, Nicholas Payton, and a woman who later turned out to have provided a false identity.

The suspects had coerced the elderly victim to withdraw a large amount of cash from the bank. Payton made an attempt to flee but was apprehended one block from the bank. A subsequent search of his backpack revealed a loaded, unserialized rifle, and Payton was discovered to be on active felony probation with multiple warrants out for his arrest. He was additionally found in possession of a controlled substance, all revelations leading to multiple charges including kidnapping, elder abuse, and various firearm violations, according to the Ceres Police Department.

The case took a further twist as the female suspect continued concealing her true identity even during the booking process. Ceres Police Department, with the collaboration of the community, later ascertained that the woman was indeed Stephanie Maghoney, as confirmed through fingerprint analysis with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department's assistance. Maghoney was found to have an active felony warrant from the Tracy Police Department for burglary and was accordingly re-arrested on charges including false impersonation, apart from her involvement in the kidnapping incident.

Officials have recognized the community's crucial contribution to the positive identification of the suspects, emphasizing the role played by public vigilance in such scenarios. Expressing gratitude, the police department stated, "Your cooperation played a vital role in holding a violent offender accountable and ensuring justice for the victims in this case." The seriousness of the offenses committed can't be understated and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of police work in collaboration with the community. The investigation into these events remains active, and the Ceres Police Department encourage anyone with more information to contact them.
