In Chandler, the call for honoring those who carry forward the mission of social justice has been put forth with the opening of nominations for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Program. The city is seeking to acknowledge individuals who are notably advancing human and civil rights, as reported by the City of Chandler's news center. This recognition stretches across three categories: the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award, the Emma Arbuckle Empowerment Award, and the Youth Action Award.
The esteemed Dr. MLK Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award is designated for individuals whose work has significantly promoted social and economic justice within the Chandler community. To be eligible for consideration, nominees must be engaged in efforts that can directly to be directly tied to enhancing the dignity of all people, in the spirit of Dr. King's legacy. The Emma Arbuckle Empowerment Award, meanwhile, is targeted at those who strive to lift the community through leadership and racial equality initiatives. Emma Arbuckle, after whom the award is named, was known for her commanding presence and advocacy within South Chandler. The third category, the Youth Action Award, honors a younger individual, aged 18 or younger, who embodies a commitment to non-violence and service.
All nominations are due by noon on December 8, as per the city's announcement, with the submission process being handled online. Each nomination is to clearly outline the nominee's specific achievements and contributions to the upkeep of human and civil rights. Nominees must have a connection to Chandler, whether it be through residency, employment, or education within the city limits. For those who wish to put forward a candidate, detailed criteria and information on past winners are accessible through the city's website.
The winners of each award category will be decided and informed in the week following the December 15 notification period. Those selected for these honors will then be celebrated at a ceremony to take place on January 16, 2026.
