A devastating incident occurred in Tampa where a vehicle collided with multiple pedestrians, leading to four deaths and eleven injuries. As detailed by a Tampa government news release, the crash took place on E. 7th Avenue in the Ybor district. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed deep sorrow over the event, stating, "What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted."
The incident unraveled when Tampa Police Department's Air Service spotted a vehicle engaging in reckless driving on I-275 around 12:40 am. The car had been seen before, street racing on Hillsborough Avenue near 22nd Street, the vehicle's driver disregarded safety, speeding onto Doyle Carlton Drive. Even after Florida Highway Patrol joined the pursuit and tried to stop the vehicle with a PIT maneuver, the driver raced on, eventually crashing on 7th Avenue into a storefront crowded with people.
The carnage left three individuals dead at the scene and another succumbing to injuries at the hospital. In a cruel twist of fate, fifteen people, all adults, were caught in the destructive path of the vehicle. While one remains in critical condition, eight are stable after receiving treatment in local hospitals. Two individuals, albeit less harmed, declined medical attention.
