Over the past weekend, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has managed to keep himself at the center of both local and international spotlights, with actions ranging from inviting U.N. experts to investigate human rights issues to opening a new teen education center, in a whirlwind of public service and advocacy. Speaking to the gravity of the situation, according to the official press release from the City of Chicago, Mayor Johnson called upon the United Nations Human Rights Council to dispatch independent inspectors to Chicago to document the escalating human rights violations amidst the continuing immigration crackdown, specifically citing the use of tear gas and flashbangs against protesters and the reported use of pepper spray on a young child.
Mayor Johnson's commitment to community dialogue was apparent as he engaged with constituents through the Protecting Chicago Budget Town Hall sessions, fielding questions and communicating details of his budget proposal, which is poised to protect the most vulnerable, during a stop at Goethe Elementary School in the Northwest Side alongside local representatives Alds. Daniel La Spata, Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, Jessie Fuentes, and Anthony Quezada. Mayor Johnson later inaugurated the Orleans Teen Center in the Cabrini-Green neighborhood, a facility brought to life through a $5 million Community Development Grant and designed to provide around 2,100 teens with paid opportunities for learning and growth beyond the conventional classroom setting.
In his remarks at the opening of the Orleans Teen Center, "For too long we have not invested enough in our young people, because too many people have seen them as a problem, and not as an opportunity," Mayor Johnson stated. Mayor Johnson also took his concerns to a national audience, appearing on MSNBC with Reverend Al Sharpton where he discussed the pressing human rights issues in Chicago, the impact of the federal government shutdown in the city, and his hopes for the U.N.’s involvement, Mayor Johnson's media engagement comes on the heels of DHS reports of misconduct and violence, including incidents involving ICE agents and reports of pepper spray being used on minors, bringing a critical eye to federal operations within the city, which has only underlined the Mayor’s advocacies. Lastly, Chicago has been selected to host the Midwest countdown for the first time in "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" 50-year history, a move announced by Mayor Johnson this morning and made possible through a partnership with ABC7 and Dick Clark Productions, the addition to this iconic celebration marking another step in the city's striving vibrancy and sense of community.
