As residents and visitors prepare for the influx of holiday traffic in Chillicothe, they should brace themselves for temporary delays on North Bridge Street. From Tuesday, November 18, Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) crews will commence re-striping work on the stretch between North Plaza Boulevard and the Chillicothe Mall/Zane Plaza entrance. According to ODOT District 9, this work will expand the road's capacity, adding an extra northbound lane to ease the seasonal congestion.
Although locals might crave minimal disruption, the painting of pavement markings requires daytime temperatures above 40 degrees, making night work unfeasible. Explaining the timing of the operations, ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Mike Dombrowski said, "When we first announced this transformative improvement project, we promised to pause construction and get out of the way by Thanksgiving," as he cited the significance of meeting project benchmarks. Motorists are advised to anticipate lane closures and to consider using alternate routes such as SR 104/SR 207 and U.S. 23. If weather permits, Dombrowski assures the work is slated for completion by the end of next week.
The approach of the holidays brings with it promises of better traffic flow once the re-striping is finalized. Shoppers frequenting the area, including popular destinations like Kohl’s and Walmart, will benefit from the newly operational roundabout on Consumer Center Drive. "While things are opening, the project is not yet complete, and we do expect there to continue to be some delays. However, North Bridge Street should operate much better than it did over the summer," Dombrowski added. In addition to improved thoroughfare capacities, all turn lanes will reopen to facilitate smoother transitions.
Addressing the potential traffic snags, ODOT urges drivers to exercise caution, especially at signalized intersections. The anticipation of not being able to clear these intersections must be accompanied by patience to avoid additional congestion. With everyone's cooperation, the woes of seasonal traffic should be mitigated. As for the continued development of North Bridge Street, the infrastructure project gears up for its next phase, embarking in early 2026 with a completion horizon set in 2027.
