The Harford County Sheriff's Office recently joined forces with veteran journalist Chris Hansen in an undercover sting operation designed to identify and apprehend child sex predators. The sting, spanning a month, netted nine arrests of men from Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, as announced by Sheriff Jeff Gahler in a video posted on social media.
The sting operation is a part of Chris Hansen's newer program "Takedown," reminiscent of his past series "To Catch a Predator." The premise involves individuals engaging in digital correspondence with presumed minors with the intent to meet for sexual acts, only to find themselves conversing with an undercover agent. "When I was first approached about conducting this operation, it was my sincere hope that we would come up empty-handed, that we would find there were no predators that wanted to terrorize our kids here in Harford County, and that the operation would end with zero arrests," Gahler said, according to Fox Baltimore. Yet hopes were dashed—predators were indeed on the prowl.
Among those apprehended were Nicholas Fountain, a 38-year-old from Pennsylvania and owner of two daycare centers, along with Patrick Macaluso, a 36-year-old lawyer from Virginia, found by authorities using a government computer to seek underage victims. Another suspect, 72-year-old Charles Schmidt, allegedly came equipped with condoms and alcohol to enhance his encounter with who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, as detailed by Gahler in a report by WMAR-2 News.
Episodes featuring these sting operations are expected to air this winter, spotlighting the grim reality of predatory behavior and the ongoing fight against it.
