Boulder Fire-Rescue (BFR) has inked a deal with Falck Rocky Mountain to handle ambulance transport services for the City of Boulder starting January 2026. This partnership promises to maintain high-quality emergency medical care without interruption as the current contract with American Medical Response (AMR) comes to an end on December 31. The Boulder community can brace for a switch in ambulance providers as details were made public earlier this week.
After issuing an RFP in July of this year and running a competitive selection process, the City of Boulder settled on Falck Rocky Mountain in September. This decision was made official on November 26, as reported by the City of Boulder. With a reputation for clinician-centered patient care and a reliable response history in the Front Range, Falck appears well-equipped for the job. Residents should take note that Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances will be staffed and operational around the clock, under a contract that spans three years with options for extensions.
Jenna Steege, EMS Division Chief with Boulder Fire-Rescue, in a statement obtained by the City of Boulder, emphasized the smooth transition and continued quality care, "As we prepare for Falck to begin service in Boulder on January 1, our priority is ensuring continuity and the highest level of emergency medical care for our community. Falck was selected through a comprehensive, competitive procurement process and has demonstrated strong alignment with Boulder’s operational needs and expectations." Steege also made it a point to thank the outgoing AMR for their services over the years.
A critical aspect of the new agreement is an operational synergy between BFR and Falck. Falck's staff will act under BFR's medical directives, and Boulder fire-rescue paramedics will be able to continue care during transport in Falck ambulances. Additionally, Falck will join in integrated training and quality-improvement programs. David Patterson, Regional Managing Director at Falck USA, told the City of Boulder regarding their role, "We are honored to be trusted with the opportunity to provide emergency ambulance service for the City of Boulder. Boulder is a vibrant and beautiful community, and our selection to serve Boulder is a direct reflection of the exemplary service provided by the EMS and healthcare professionals in our existing Colorado operations in Aurora."
