The Detroit Fire Department celebrated the graduation of Class 89, officially welcoming 51 new Firefighter/EMTs trained in EMS and firefighting skills. Chief Jamal Mickles praised the cadets, saying, "These 51 cadets have risen to every challenge we set before them," and added, "Their training was intense, but their commitment never wavered. I have full confidence that they are ready to serve Detroit at the next level with courage, skill, and compassion," according to the City of Detroit.

Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms noted that the graduates continue a proud tradition of service, stating, "These new trial firefighters carry forward a passion for community, and many are following in the footsteps of parents and grandparents who served before them." During their training, the cadets learned vital skills such as fire attack, search and rescue, and Rapid Intervention Rescue, preparing them to respond to both fires and medical emergencies in Detroit, as reported by the City of Detroit.

Detroit held a graduation ceremony for its new firefighters, attended by Deputy Mayor Melia Howard, Chief David Nelson, and Councilmember Scott Benson. Howard told the graduates, "The badge you wear is a promise to the Citizens of Detroit that you protect them with every ounce of your strength and every beat of your heart." The ceremony emphasized Trial Firefighter Andre Vaughn, who, after an initial setback, earned his EMT license elsewhere and returned to complete the academy, saying, "I didn't give up," and "I knew this is where I wanted to spend my career. I did the work, came back, and today I'm a Detroit firefighter. This moment means everything to me." The event took place at Second Ebenezer Church, and the city is accepting applications for future cadet classes on its website, as mentioned by the City of Detroit.
