The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken into custody Shantokeo Rolax, a 41-year-old Coffee County Sheriff's Office investigator, on multiple charges that range from misdemeanors such as Criminal Trespass, Stalking, and Harassing Communications, to felonies including False Statements and Violation of Oath by a Public Officer. The arrest follows a request by the Coffee County Sheriff's Office on November 13 to look into incidents of harassment and property damage. In their initial findings, the GBI determined Rolax's alleged involvement in a string of problematic behaviors targeting a deputy, who was also said to be in a relationship with Rolax.
According to details released in a statement by the GBI, the investigation quickly started to quickly unravel a web of accusations against the former investigator, which included sending harassing text messages, performing unauthorized surveillance, and obstructing the law enforcement's efforts to investigate. Upon realizing the gravity of the situation and the impending arrest warrants, the Sheriff's Office terminated Rolax's employment. He was arrested on Tuesday without incident and booked into the Coffee County Jail.
This case brings into sharp focus the dilemma of law enforcement officials who step beyond the bounds of legality and trust. Rolax now faces the judicial system he once served, with the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office poised to prosecute upon completion of the GBI's investigation.
The GBI encourages anyone who might have additional information to contact the Douglas Regional Investigative Office or the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office. Anonymous tips can also be submitted either through a hotline, the GBI's website, or the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
