In a decisive blow to drug trafficking in the state, federal authorities in Colorado have made the largest methamphetamine bust in the state's history, as announced by the United States Attorney for the District of Colorado. Fifteen individuals now face federal indictments, with charges that could lead to prison sentences ranging from ten years to life, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The notable defendant among them, Marco Antonio De Silva Lara, is grappling with the 'drug kingpin' charge, which alone entails a mandatory minimum of 20 years behind bars.
The indictment lists additional defendants as Sergio Ivan Arce Lopez, Juan Luis Cabrera Saucedo, Luis Enrique Lopez Lopez, and multiple others, with several of the accused currently detained while some are believed to still be in Mexico, and during the course of the investigation, agents with a combination of wiretaps, undercover operations, and dogged surveillance arrested more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine, this involving several notable seizures throughout the state, including as much as 700 pounds from a single location in Lakewood where every nook of a fruit container hid packets of meth, while another 96 pounds were found aboard a Greyhound Bus in Vail. United States Attorney for the District of Colorado Peter McNeilly punctuated the success of the operation, stating, “This successful investigation boasts the largest methamphetamine seizure in Colorado history and intercepted more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine before it could be distributed into our community," as per the U.S. Department of Justice.
These enforcement efforts were the joint undertaking of state and federal agencies, including the DEA, FBI, IRS-CI, Homeland Security Investigations, and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, with local law enforcement also having a significant hand in these results. All charged face serious drug-related accusations, with a select few also indicted for money laundering crimes that carry up to 20 years in federal prison. The Rocky Mountain Homeland Security Task Force, a result of Executive Order 14159, "Protecting the American People Against Invasion," was key in this interagency collaboration targeting cartels and transnational crime syndicates both in the United States and abroad.
