Outdoor enthusiasts in Colorado should prepare for an update to their recreational expenses, as the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission has announced finalized changes to various regulations that will affect state park fees and hunting provisions. In a recent meeting recap, updates to regulations, including increased daily vehicle fees for Elkhead Reservoir, Pearl Lake, Stagecoach, and Steamboat Lake State Parks, were made public.
The fee adjustments, set to be implemented starting January 1, 2026, were necessitated by the need to keep pace with Senate Bill 23-059 regarding Local Access Funding. Additionally, changes outline adjustments to license fees and agent commission rates, with these figures now tied to the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Consumer Price Index. In an effort to boost safety and preparedness in the wilderness, the Commission is also increasing the backcountry search and rescue fee.
Focusing on Colorado's wildlife management, the Commission also provided details on the finalized regulations for the 2026 turkey hunting seasons. Adjustments to turkey hunting include specifics on license areas, season dates, and manner of take provisions. These decisions reflect the ongoing efforts to maintain responsible wildlife conservation and management practices in the state.
Significantly, adjustments also pertain to big game hunting, particularly in the differentiation between wild bison and domestic bison. According to the meeting recap, the Commission has laid the groundwork for "the future regulated hunting of wild bison," stemming from SB 25-053. Also integral to these changes is the elaborate framework on compensation for damage caused by wild bison, indicating an approach to wildlife management that considers multiple stakeholders.
