A Venezuelan national, Hector Velandia-Anaya, age 18, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges linked to allegations of assaulting federal officers during his arrest. The indictment comes after Velandia-Anaya reportedly tried to escape from immigration officials, dragging two officers with his vehicle as he began to drive away, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.
During the November 2 incident near Shrock Road in Columbus, Velandia-Anaya, after being pulled over, shut off his ignition but restarted the vehicle and attempted to flee when asked to exit his car. In what reads like a dangerous altercation, one officer, in trying to prevent the young man from fleeing, was dragged after reopening the driver's side door, while the other officer, reaching into the passenger seat, also strived to intervene.
U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II stated, "We will not tolerate any action that endangers the agents who are working to enforce our immigration laws," according to the U.S. Department of Justice, affirming the resolve to prosecute those posing threats to law enforcement. These events led to Velandia-Anaya's indictment, which includes two counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer, with each count carrying a potential 20-year prison sentence.
Reports detail that officers struggled with Velandia-Anaya to control the gear shifter during the attempted escape. Arrested on November 6, the indictment of Velandia-Anaya is a part of the sweeping Operation Take Back America initiative, which aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and address violent crime, according to information shared by ICE representatives Matthew Stentz and Kevin Raycraft. The prosecution is overseen by Assistant United States Attorney Emily Czerniejewski.
