A tragic event unfolded on Thanksgiving Day in a southeast Houston neighborhood when a 7-year-old boy was struck and sadly killed by a pickup truck. The incident happened as the child was riding his bike on Willow Glen Drive, near Herschelwood Street, at around 11:30 a.m. During a somber disclosure, HPD Lt. Va'Shawnda McLean said, "Well, you guys know me, and every time I do these things, it's hard. It's Thanksgiving Day and it's a child that has been struck and killed," according to a KHOU report.
The community's reaction was one of profound heartache, with residents expressing deep sorrow. Skid marks still visible on the road serve as a grim reminder of the crash's suddenness, and subsequent impact. Neighbor August Moore recounted the horrifying moment, stating, "It was really sad to see the kid on the ground. I was crying a little bit," as she told KPRC 2's Re’Chelle Turner.
The 70-year-old driver of the truck stayed at the scene, fully cooperative with law enforcement, as reported by authorities. Houston police indicated that the driver was unaware he had hit the child at first, thinking something had fallen off his truck. Upon inspection, he discovered the bike lodged underneath and found the boy lying in the street, as relayed by witness Ebony Brooks in an interview with KPRC 2.
