The discovery of human remains in the Whiteriver area of Navajo County has struck a chord in the community as authorities have now confirmed the identity of the deceased. 16-year-old Challistia Colelay, who was reported missing last month, has been named as the victim. According to family members cited by FOX 10, the remains were found near the Knots Landing community and identified through items familiar to Challistia's mother, Lula Colelay.
Lula Colelay, in a state of shock, told FOX 10 that her daughter had run away before, but had always returned. She was prompted to contact the authorities immediately after the discovery announcement, "All I wanted to know was, is it a female or male, and she said it was a female," Lula recounted. The subsequent evidence presented to her, including Challistia's bracelet, necklace, shoes, and phone, led to the confirmation of her daughter's identity.
Questions have arisen regarding the non-issuance of a Turquoise Alert in connection with Challistia's disappearance. A response from the Arizona Department of Public Safety to inquiries by FOX 10 noted that no formal request had been made by the White Mountain Apache Police, and that this was their first notification of Challistia's case, despite her being reported missing twice in October 2024.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs and White Mountain Apache Tribal Police, together in a joint statement posted to Facebook and obtained by the Mountain Daily Star, have assured continued efforts to "bring closure to Challistia Colelay’s family and community and justice to those responsible." The case, which remains under investigation, has law enforcement seeking information from the public. Anyone with details relevant to Challistia's death is urged to reach out to authorities through the BIA Missing and Murdered Unit Hotline or email, or by texting their tip.
The loss of Challistia has left her family and the community awaiting answers, with loved ones indicating that an autopsy was scheduled for November 6. The community is encouraged to aid the investigation by contacting the appropriate authorities with any helpful information.
