Residents of the Bay View Houses in Canarsie, Brooklyn, were met with a harrowing sight on Thursday when the remains of a fetus were found within the confines of their community. As reported by ABC7NY, the unsettling discovery was made around 11 a.m. between two buildings, signaling the start of an investigation that would leave many shaken.
Initial estimates by the police suggest the fetus, a male, was approximately five to seven months gestational age. The black bag containing the remains was spotted by a NYCHA worker who was cleaning up the area. "I saw the whole crime scene unit. It's crazy. A lot of people are devastated over here," Erik Roman, an eyewitness, told ABC7NY.
In the aftermath, area resident Lisa Deroche, moved by the incident, laid down a makeshift memorial at the site of the discovery, according to ABC7NY. "I dropped the teddy bear for her, and my brother dropped the balloons because she's a baby. She's innocent," said Deroche, who herself has experienced the loss of a baby. Reflecting a sentiment of communal pain and sympathy, she added, "You can't just throw it out. It's not an animal, not trash."
Meanwhile, NY1 gathered reactions from other residents, pointing to the community's grief and disbelief. Charles Johnson expressed his sorrow, saying, "Make me feel destroyed. That sucks. I can't believe it. It happens. I feel sorry for the mother. She's probably going through a lot of stuff, but it happens you know." The discovery of the fetus united residents in mourning and reflection, as many contributed to a growing memorial comprising candles, balloons, and stuffed animals.
Further details on the circumstances surrounding the fetus's death or the duration it remained in the bag are as yet unknown. Law enforcement officials, alongside the medical examiner, are investigating to determine the cause of death and identify the individual who discarded the fetus. So far, no signs of trauma have been reported by police, and no arrests have made as the case unfolds. As the neighborhood grapples with this tragedy, the collective sentiment echoes the words shared by a local, during an interview with NY1: "If you're going through something and you're pregnant, reach out to somebody, please talk to somebody."
