Concord residents, mark your calendars and join the City in celebrating Veterans Day with events and modified services this November. According to an announcement from the City of Concord's official website, government offices will be closed next Tuesday in observance of the holiday. The City Council Work Session, typically scheduled for this date, will instead take place on next Monday at 4 p.m.
In the days leading up to the holiday, on Saturday, the city will host the annual Veterans Salute 5K and 10K races in Downtown Concord, presented by the American Legion Post 51. Community members still have a chance to register for these races, with online sign-ups open through the day of the event. A family-friendly one-mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the main races kicking off at 9 a.m. Along with the races, attendees can enjoy a food truck, kids' zone, and a host of other activities on McCachern Boulevard.
Road closures for the event will begin at 7 a.m. that Saturday, impacting McCachern Boulevard between Cabarrus Avenue and Means Avenue, among others. No parking will be permitted along certain sections of Union Street starting at 6 a.m., with enforcement including towing to ensure a smooth flow for the race.
Continuing with the commemorative events, a special celebration to honor local veterans will take place at the Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County, located at 247 Spring St NW. The City is partnering with Cabarrus County to host the event on Veterans Day itself next Tuesday starting at 11 a.m. This event is open to all and will provide refreshments for attendees.
Concord also highlighted changes in city services due to the holiday. There will be no Solid Waste Services collection on Tuesday, and customers scheduled for Tuesday to Thursday collection should expect one-day delays. Recreation centers will open for limited hours from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., with specific facilities closed. Rider Transit, however, will operate on its regular schedule, honoring military veterans eligible for Reduced Fare ID Cards, applications for which can be obtained online or at the Rider Transit Center Customer Service Office.
