A fire broke out on Thursday morning at a wastewater treatment facility in southwest Phoenix, leaving one contractor injured. Phoenix Fire crews responded around 9:30 a.m. to the plant near 91st and Southern avenues, where smoke was coming from an underground digester tunnel about 10 feet below the surface, as detailed by ABC15.
Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller told FOX 10 Phoenix that a contractor was injured in a fire. "The contractor (adult male) was treated at a local hospital in stable condition for superficial burns to his hands and face and is expected to recover." The facility was evacuated as a safety measure, and there were no reported effects on wastewater services or local residents.
The contractor injured in the fire is expected to recover. A precautionary evacuation of the plant kept other workers safe, and the fire department responded quickly. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and Phoenix officials have not provided further details. The welfare of the surrounding community and the city's essential services were not affected during the incident.
