A Chicago police officer spent part of Thanksgiving evening in the hospital after a marked squad car collided with an SUV and then slammed into the front gate of a home near 76th Street and Wabash Avenue in Chatham. The crash drew a fast emergency response to the South Side intersection, where officials said the officer hurt their left shoulder, and the SUV driver was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
Where It Happened
According to ABC7 Chicago, the officer was driving a marked CPD squad car with emergency lights activated, heading south on Wabash Avenue, when the vehicle collided with an SUV traveling west on 76th Street. The impact sent the squad car into the front gate of a corner house, leaving visible damage to the property. Traffic in the area was briefly tied up while first responders cleared the scene and assessed the damage.
Nearby Incidents
The crash comes on the heels of another vehicle-related run-in involving officers in the same general area earlier this month. On Nov. 1, a suspect fleeing police in Chatham struck a marked squad car and hit an officer, according to CBS Chicago.
Officer's Condition
As reported by ABC7 Chicago, the officer suffered an injury to the left shoulder and was expected to be OK. The man behind the wheel of the SUV was listed in good condition at the University of Chicago Hospital. Police said no citations were issued at the scene.
