Early on the morning of November 6, Cornelius residents were shocked by an explosion and subsequent gunfire at a home in their neighborhood. The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported deputies were called to the 300 block of N 10th Avenue at 4:13 a.m., following an explosive device being thrown at a residence. A 911 caller discovered the damage to their home, including multiple bullet holes in the door. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the incident.
The deputies quickly determined that the violent act was not a random one, believing it was targeted, with the suspect potentially known to the victims. Their investigation led the deputies, with the assistance of the Washington County Community Violence Reduction Team (CoVRT) and the Metro Explosives Disposal Unit, to 37-year-old Samuel Lund. Additional resources were called upon, including the Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) and the Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU), who felt the need to approach with caution due to the potential of Lund having more firearms and explosives.
Acting on this information, investigators set their sights on Lund's Beaverton residence. Positioned near the 13000 block of SW Cottontail Lane, the CoVRT secured a search warrant. As they prepared to serve the warrant, Lund was spotted leaving his home by bicycle around 10:30 p.m. Authorities intercepted and detained him near SW Scholls Ferry Road without further incident.
Upon searching Lund’s residence, investigators found additional explosive devices, confirming their suspicions of the dangers he possessed. Lund was charged with numerous offenses, including four counts of attempted first-degree murder and arson, according to an official statement by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at washingtoncountyor.gov. After being taken into custody, Lund was transferred to the Washington County Jail pending legal proceedings.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office is reaching out to the community for additional information regarding the Cornelius incident. Witnesses or individuals with relevant details have been requested to contact non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111, referencing case number 57-22-1150.
