In DeKalb County, the government leadership is stepping up to the plate to address economic struggles affecting the community. At a recent press conference, CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, alongside the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and other local entities, unveiled a series of initiatives designed to provide relief for families grappling with financial hardships.
In a concerted effort to directly support those impacted, DeKalb County is set to fully pay off existing student meal debt for the DeKalb County School District. With over 1,800 students facing negative balances, this move will alleviate one burden for families and to allow children to come to school without the worry of lunch debt. As per an official announcement, CEO Cochran-Johnson declared, “By eliminating this debt, we are ensuring that every child in DeKalb can come to school and focus on learning, while parents who may be facing challenges don't have to worry about whether they can afford lunch for their children.”
Moreover, to tackle food insecurity head-on, the county has earmarked $400,000 for food distributions during the holiday season. These efforts include a partnership with the Midwest Food Bank to distribute 800 food boxes across several churches in the area and a turkey giveaway in collaboration with MARTA, targeted at residents reliant on public transport.
Adding to this initiative, the DeKalb Farm Fresh Mobile Market was launched, designed to directly bring fresh produce to local senior centers and schools. Meanwhile, the DeKalb HOME-American Rescue Plan Program has been working tirelessly to combat housing instability with a $5.5 million fund earmarked for those at risk or currently without a home. Community Development Department Director, Allen Mitchell, told the audience “Together, we are building a stronger, more stable, and more compassionate DeKalb County where every resident has access to housing and the resources they need to thrive,” as noted by the county's website.
For residents in need of support beyond food and housing, the county has also put together a DeKalb County Resource Assistance Guide, complete with a website providing easily accessible information about food, housing, utility, healthcare, and financial assistance programs. Eligibility for the HOME-ARP program requires DeKalb residency and pre-screening, which can be initiated by calling their dedicated number during business hours. Full details are available through the county’s newly developed online resources.
