An investigation is underway in DeKalb County, Georgia, where an officer-involved shooting occurred, resulting in injuries to both a civilian and a law enforcement officer. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed the shooting incident in a recent update. The event took a serious turn when a woman engaged officers with gunfire, leading to an escalation that culminated in the use of force by police. Following the incident, charges were pressed against the woman identified as Shkinnia Patrice Thomas.

The GBI's press release outlines the charges against Thomas, including one count of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and two counts of felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer. The shooting unfolded early in the morning on Friday, as DeKalb County police received a 911 call alleging a hostage situation on Errol Drive in Lithonia, GA.

Upon arrival at approximately 5:34 a.m., police officers faced a volatile scenario, activating protocols for such high-stress encounters. The GBI detailed that initially, no occupants responded to officers' attempts to communicate at the door. Entering the residence, officers encountered Thomas armed and uncooperative. Despite receiving directives to disarm, Thomas reportedly shot at officers, striking one officer in their protective vest. A return shot from another officer injured Thomas, who was then hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.

Further investigation inside the home revealed two uninjured individuals, believed to be the homeowners, but no children, as initially claimed by the 911 call. The incident's pressure-cooker nature was compounded by the perplexing absence of the alleged hostages. The injured officer, fortunately, did not require further medical attention. The DeKalb County Police Department is concurrently looking into the prior hostage situation, while the GBI's investigation focuses on the officer-involved shooting. Justice will take its course as the completed investigations will be reviewed by the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office.
