On Thursday, a section of the Detroit Riverwalk between Beaubien and Rivard streets will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists for I-375 improvements, including the installation of a new storm sewer to reduce flooding. Detours will redirect Riverwalk users to Atwater Street until mid-December, then to Franklin Street until spring 2026, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The construction affects the riverside and Schweizer Place sections, which are expected to be completed by spring 2026. The project aims to improve water systems and neighborhood safety, especially during heavy rainfall, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Michigan Department of Transportation said the pace of the storm sewer project will depend on the weather. The new sewer will discharge cleaner water into the Detroit River, reduce strain on the city's combined sewer system, and provide "lasting environmental benefits." A detour via Atwater Street will be in place through mid-December, then Franklin Street will be used until the Riverwalk reopens.
