Early Saturday morning, a devastating fire claimed the lives of dozens of chickens housed in a barn located in a northwest suburb of Chicago. According to NBC Chicago, firefighters from the Harvard Fire Protection District were called to tackle the blaze on the 4700 block of Lindwall Road in McHenry County. The response began around 5:30 a.m, where officials encountered not only a barn "fully engulfed and already collapsing" but also two vehicles in flames.
The situation escalated quickly, with the fire beginning to spread to the nearby house when the authorities arrived. In an action to stop further tragedy, the incident was upgraded, prompting the fire team to immediately request additional personnel and water resources. As per the same report by NBC Chicago, it was confirmed that all 50 to 60 chickens within the barn perished in the fire.
The on-scene firefighters managed to control the blaze within 25 minutes, and fortunately, the house suffered only minor damage in the ordeal. The family residing there was able to evacuate safely before the fire department arrived, avoiding any human casualties.
While the fire's origins are still being investigated by the Harvard Fire Protection District, officials stated the incident does not appear to have been suspicious. Fox 32 Chicago reported that between 50 and 60 chickens being kept in the barn are believed to have been killed. Despite the family's fortunate escape, the loss of livestock serves as a wrenching reminder of the risks of fires in residential farming areas.
