Early Friday morning, an incident on North Lombard Street in North Portland drew the attention of emergency services, as a pickup truck collided with a garbage truck, leaving one individual critically injured. As recounted by KPTV, the collision occurred near the corner of North Lombard Street and North Ida Avenue, with Portland Fire & Rescue responding to the scene to find the pickup truck driver trapped underneath the steering wheel.
The challenging rescue operation involved firefighters using power tools to cut through the dashboard of the pickup truck. The driver was subsequently transported to a hospital; their condition was not made public at the time of reporting, according to KPTV. No other injuries were reported in the crash, providing a small relief in the light of what could have been a far grimmer scene.
Further details from KOIN state that the accident happened just after 7:30 a.m. on the 6800 block of North Lombard Street. Firefighters had to open up the passenger side of the vehicle to reach the injured driver, who was described as being critical at the time of the rescue.
While the cause of the crash remains unknown, local authorities are presumably investigating the incident. Updates have yet to be provided regarding the status of the injured driver, and as KGW noted, no further information was disclosed about their current condition following their rush to the hospital. The community now waits, hopeful for news of recovery yet braced for the reality that urban roads often give way to these moments of unexpected calamity.
