A 65-year-old man died Friday evening after a vehicle struck him in Waianae and the driver took off, authorities said. The crash happened around 5:10 p.m. at the private driveway to the Hale Wai Vista apartments on Farrington Highway. Witnesses and investigators say the motorist turned onto Farrington and continued west without stopping. Emergency crews brought the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Police Say Motorist Fled The Scene
The Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section said an unidentified motorist was traveling south within the extended private driveway of Hale Wai Vista when the vehicle hit the 65-year-old pedestrian, who was crossing near Farrington Highway. The driver then made a right onto Farrington and continued westbound without rendering aid. Police noted there is no crosswalk at that spot, speed does not appear to be a factor, and it’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
EMS Treated The Victim; He Later Died
Paramedics provided advanced life support at the scene before transporting the man to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The collision happened near the Hele gas station on Farrington Highway as investigators review surveillance and witness statements, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
West Oahu Road Safety Concerns
The Waianae stretch of Farrington has seen multiple serious collisions, and Oahu has experienced an uptick in traffic deaths this year that’s prompted stepped-up enforcement and outreach. Local reporting has documented increased traffic stops and patrols on the west side as officials work to curb crashes while community leaders push for infrastructure fixes, according to Civil Beat.
Possible Charges If Driver Is Found
HPD’s Vehicular Homicide Section is leading the investigation, and prosecutors could pursue criminal charges depending on the evidence. Under Hawaii law, negligent-homicide provisions and hit-and-run statutes can apply when a crash causes death and a driver fails to stop or render aid; those statutes are outlined in the Hawaii Revised Statutes.
How To Help The Investigation
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division. Detectives are canvassing the area for video and witnesses as the probe continues. Tips and inquiries can be routed through HPD’s traffic media page, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
