A Brooklyn driver, who earlier this year struck and killed a mother and her two children with her car, is set for her sentencing. Miriam Yarimi is expected to appear in Brooklyn Supreme Court at 9:30 a.m. today, as reported by CBS News. The 33-year-old driver had pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and is facing a sentence of three to nine years in prison under a plea deal that was reached, despite objections from prosecutors.
The fatal crash occurred on March 29 along Ocean Parkway in Midwood, causing a devastating impact on the community. The Gothamist reported that Yarimi was speeding at the time of the incident, driving more than twice the speed limit when her Audi SUV hit 34-year-old Natasha Saada and her daughters, 8-year-old Diana and 5-year-old Deborah, killing them. Saada's 4-year-old son Phillip was also critically injured in the tragedy. According to authorities, Yarimi's license was suspended, and she had accumulated dozens of speeding tickets since 2023.
Notably, Yarimi's encounter with the law paints a complex portrait. She reportedly won a $2 million settlement from the city in a sexual abuse lawsuit, in which she claimed to have been forced into sex with an NYPD officer at age 14. However, prior to this crash, Yarimi boasted more than 99 traffic violations, including 20 speeding tickets and owing upwards of $10,000 in unpaid fines. Her attorney, however, described her as a mother and an active community member, this being her first criminal justice involvement.
The incident has ignited discussions around legislative changes for repeat speeding offenders. Some community members have called for the Stop Super Speeders Act, which mandates a device installation capping a vehicle's maximum speed for habitual offenders. The tragic events on Ocean Parkway have also renewed calls for safety improvements along the roadway, where at least 15 people have been killed in crashes since 2017, as Gothamist documents.
Reflecting on the gravity of the accident, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez told CBS News, "In my over 25 years as a prosecutor in Brooklyn, this still remains one of the worst collisions that I have ever seen on a New York City street." The fallout of this case continues as the community awaits the sentencing and looks to preventative measures for the future.
