Officers apprehended a 45-year-old Dublin man on Wednesday after an investigation into a reported burglary at a south campus sorority house, which had heightened fears among residents. The arrest followed several sightings of an intruder at the all-female sorority on Warring Street, where he was seen entering a bedroom and fleeing through a back door on November 1, as well as numerous other encounters inside the sorority house since approximately 3 am that day.
After reviewing security footage from the property, detectives discovered video evidence of the suspect, identified as Courtney Alford, of Dublin, CA, moving about the premises until 6:35 AM. Alford changed his clothes, donned a ski mask, and was seen leaving and returning to the sorority in a manner that suggested premeditation. The investigation, as detailed by the Berkeley Police Department, also revealed Alford's theft of food and underwear from one of the rooms, and a disturbing account of him watching women shower.
Employing FLOCK technology, detectives pieced together Alford's movements by tracking images of his vehicle in the vicinity around the time of the burglary. This, in combination with the other evidence gathered, led to the acquisition of an arrest warrant on November 4th. The following day, Alford was located and arrested without incident in Castro Valley, CA.
Further investigation at Alford's residence unearthed a troubling discovery: parts of an assault rifle, high-capacity magazines, and an arsenal of over 900 rounds of ammunition. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office swiftly charged Alford with multiple felonies yesterday, including burglary and invasion of privacy, along with possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, and several counts of unlawful entry with additional criminal enhancements.
