The streets of Duluth have taken a twist right out of a cult classic film, with the city unveiling the new name for its snowplow. "The Big LePlowski", a playful nod to the Coen Brothers' "The Big Lebowski", rolled out during the Christmas City of the North Parade. This name was chosen by public vote, a process that invited Duluth residents to select their favorite from a batch of submitted entries.
According to a social media post by the City of Duluth, MN Government, the community was very much involved in this christening. With dozens of name options put forth and then narrowed down by an online vote, it was Duluth resident Gary Gibson's submission that took the prize. Gibson, honored by the community's embrace of his suggestion, was given a seat of honor in The Big LePlowski during its parade debut.
The light-hearted engagement with Duluth's citizens doesn't just stop at naming. "We hope when you see the Big LePlowski out doing its snow removal work that it brings a smile to your face, and if it doesn’t well, in the words of The Dude, 'that’s just, like, your opinion, man'", the city's post read, echoing the laid-back lingo of the film's protagonist. This communal approach to public service and city operations reflects a trend in local governments seeking to infuse a sense of fun and participation in what might otherwise be mundane civic matters.
While The Big LePlowski's name may be steeped in humor, the work it does is serious business. Winters in Duluth are known for their heavy snowfalls, making effective snow removal critical for safe city navigation. The City of Duluth seems keen to maintain a spirit of community and lightness, in spite of the harsh winters, and Gary Gibson's winning name suggestion evidences a shared appreciation for cleverness, in civic life. So as The Big LePlowski takes on the winter streets, residents can now add a film reference to their everyday vernacular, making the chill a bit more bearable with a chuckle.
