A 64-year-old man was found dead early Thursday inside an East Garfield Park apartment after suffering severe head trauma, according to Chicago police. Officers were called to the scene shortly after 1:20 a.m., and the man was pronounced dead where he was found.
Police responded to a call in the 3100 block of West Madison Street and discovered the victim lying on the ground, as first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. No arrests had been made as of early Thursday, and detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Area 3 division were assigned to investigate.
West Side context
Violent deaths continue to hit Chicago’s West Side hard, and community advocates frequently point to decades of disinvestment and gaps in health care as key drivers. Reporting by WBEZ highlights that residents of West Garfield Park face one of the city’s starkest life-expectancy gaps: roughly 67 years, compared with about 87 years for people living in the Loop. Homicide is cited as a major factor in those early deaths.
Investigators, next steps
Area 3 detectives are leading the case, and the Chicago Police Department identifies its Area 3 detective division as the unit that handles many investigations on the West Side. The department lists a contact number for Area 3 as (312) 744-8263 on the Chicago Police Department website. Authorities urge anyone with information to share tips anonymously through CPDTIP.com, a practice noted in local coverage by CBS News Chicago.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will review the case and determine the official cause and manner of death. Autopsy and toxicology findings are released by that office as they become available. This story will be updated as police or the medical examiner provides additional information.
