Yvonne Guerrero, serving as the school nurse at Canyon Hills Middle School, has been recognized for her exemplary service and was recently awarded the title of 2025 Texas School Nurse of the Year. The accolade was presented by the Texas School Nurse Organization at their annual conference, spotlighting Guerrero among the state's leading health professionals dedicated to student care, as reported by El Paso ISD.
The journey to this award began when she was named the Region 19 School Nurse of the Year earlier in May, which propelled her into the running for the state-level honor. Guerrero stood apart in the competitive review process, with TSNO recognizing her for her demonstrated leadership and steadfast commitment to the health and well-being of students and colleagues in the district.
Guerrero's influence extends far beyond individual care. For seven years, she has taken the lead in the district's Nurses' Spirit Committee, driving initiatives meant to fortify the communal spirit and boost morale among her peers. As reported by El Paso ISD, these activities range from holiday celebrations to Nurses’ Week festivities, which have importantly augmented the camaraderie between school nurses in El Paso.
A recognized figure in her field, Guerrero fuelled not just local but also regional professional growth, serving as Secretary for the TSNO Region 19 Board. Attended by more than 50 school nurses, she ensured the 2025 Regional Conference was steeped in detail and planning, thus enhancing the professional development of many, a feat acknowledged by the district.
Moreover, being a mentor and coach, Guerrero frequently takes university and college nursing students under her wing, prepping them with practical experience and knowledge for their future endeavors in the health field. "Being a school nurse is a privilege," Guerrero noted, as per El Paso ISD, emphasizing the impact and importance her role and fellow nurses play every day in the lives of students and families.
