A house in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, was consumed by fire yesterday, with emergency responders facing significant challenges due to the location and infrastructure. According to a spokesperson for the Elizabeth Township Fire Department, the blaze was reported just before 4 p.m., WPXI reported. The situation was exacerbated by the home's remote position, an uphill battle fought on a one-lane driveway, and a small bridge leading there with weight restrictions.
With the fire discovery confirmed shortly after by a passing Allegheny County sheriff's deputy, firefighting crews had to grapple with not just the distance, but also a lack of available resources on-site. The nearest hydrant, located on Simpson Howell Road, suffered a "catastrophic failure," rendering it inoperable and significantly hampering efforts, as per the department's spokesperson. Until a reliable supply could be established, tank water was used to try and douse the flames, WPXI's report adds.
Meanwhile, the Elizabeth Township Fire Department took to Facebook to issue a warning, urging residents to avoid the area of Dillon Road off Simpson Howell Road as they worked to contain the fire. The post came just before 4:30 p.m., as detailed by WTAE.
No injuries were reported in the fire, providing some relief to first responders. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is now investigating the incident.
