Emergency crews in Avery County are currently fighting a wildfire that has engulfed 120 acres near the airport, as reported by WCNC Charlotte. Initiated on yesterday, the blaze rapidly spread through the Elk Valley community, located a short distance north of Banner Elk and the slopes of Beech Mountain. With smoke billowing into the sky, visible from Highway 194, teams from multiple fire departments, Avery County Emergency Management, and the North Carolina Forest Service work vigorously to contain the fire.
In an effort to control the conflagration, a helicopter was observed releasing torrents of water onto the flames, a tactic aimed at preventing their spread, according to footage provided to WCNC Charlotte. Residents, as well as drivers traversing the vicinity of the fire, have been advised to anticipate considerable smoke and are cautioned to be vigilant on the roadways.
The North Carolina Forest Service maps update stated that the wildfire, which had skirted around the perimeters of six structures and an equivalent number of homes, held a containment line of 50% as of Monday night. Concerned about the environmental conditions conducive to wildfire spread, the Banner Elk Volunteer Fire & Rescue released a warning against outdoor burning. "Due to the windy, dry conditions, we ask that you refrain from burning outdoors, for the next few days. Thank you for doing your part!" this cautionary statement came from QC News. Preliminary tactics deployed by the Forest Service to combat the blaze included the use of two bulldozers to establish containment lines, as found in a communication to WBTV.
