Eugene's city planners are charting a new course for the city's future, focusing keenly on inclusivity and smarter expansion. According to information released on the City of Eugene official website, a significant push for comprehensive urban growth strategies is currently underway. This months-long collaborative effort is delving into Eugene's pressing needs for more housing, jobs, and essential amenities like parks, schools, and infrastructure.
In a bold move aimed at reconciling past planning decisions with a more equitable present, the planning staff have rolled out the Equity Atlas. The "Equity Atlas: Selected Stories in Eugene’s History of Displacement" offers an honest look at historic land-use decisions and their enduring effects on present-day land use and housing access, as per the City of Eugene website. The initiative reflects an awareness—an understanding of the long shadows cast by past policies.
The urban policy roadmap is presently under revision, with the Eugene's Comprehensive Plan Update reflecting the community's voice in molding draft goals and policies. In addition, the Planning Division has put forth a draft Eugene Centers and Key Corridors map, which delineates the pivotal areas for the city’s concentrated development.
Securing adequate housing for Eugene's future is not an isolated task—the city staff have laid out a series of concrete actions focusing on housing, compact development, and jobs. These actions are slated for City Council consideration in 2026 and 2027, laying the groundwork for a more robust urban fabric. The Planning Division, in its detailed 2025 Community Engagement Summary, paints a clear picture of the past year's public interactions and the resonant themes culled from Eugene's diverse voices.
Looking ahead, the city council can expect a full briefing on these urban growth strategies. Following a November 12 meeting, a subsequent session on November 24, 2025, will see Planning Division staff requesting the initiation of critical land use code and plan amendments vital to the Urban Growth Strategies.
