More than a year after a Memorial Day welfare check turned into a homicide investigation, former Fort Bend County Sheriff’s deputy Lamarcus Oneal Smith was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the death of his wife, 37-year-old Laura Smith, an early childhood special education aide with Lamar CISD. Authorities say Smith is in custody as the case heads to court, leaving a Richmond neighborhood and school community seeking answers, as reported by KHOU.

Smith was formally charged Wednesday by the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office and is being held on a $500,000 bond, according to KHOU. Prosecutors said the filing followed an investigation by the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office and a review of the medical examiner’s findings. Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 6500 block of Snowbell Court in Richmond after family members requested a welfare check on May 27, 2024. Inside, they found Laura Smith unresponsive. The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide and said she suffered traumatic injuries, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives initially treated the incident as isolated while they continued the investigation.
