Tragedy struck Alhambra in the early hours of Thursday morning when a police pursuit ended in a fatal and violent collision, resulting in the death of one person and critical injuries to an Alhambra police officer. Details from ABC7 describe the scene near Valley Boulevard and Edgewood Drive, where the chase began at Valley and Fremont Avenue and culminated in significant wreckage and the loss of a civilian's life.
Reports suggest the incident occurred around 3 a.m.; however, the circumstances that initiated the pursuit remain unclear. A witness, who requested anonymity, heard the loud crash and observed three vehicles, including a patrol unit, involved. It was later confirmed by police that only one civilian vehicle was part of the crash, as per the information obtained by ABC7. A woman tragically died at the scene after being ejected from her car, which resulted in an additional two people being hospitalized with serious injuries, including the male passenger of the ejected woman.
The KTLA report shared heart-wrenching details from the scene, describing the aftermath of the gray SUV, which came to a halt in a Wienerschnitzel parking lot, slamming into the police SUV and thereby causing substantial damage to the latter. Rescuers found the officer unconscious in the vehicle, and subsequent cellphone video footage showed a desperate effort to extract the officer, who "was unconscious and not doing so well," according to onlookers.
The critically injured officer was subsequently transported to Los Angeles General Medical Center, escorted by police officers to expedite the journey. Despite the swift action, the exact status of the officer's condition has not been disclosed. "There was a couple of officers trying to get the other officer that was stuck in the car," detailed a witness in a statement obtained by KTLA, emphasizing the urgency witnesses felt amid the chaos.
Adding to the narrative, FOX LA reported that authorities have confirmed the custody of a possible suspect, but it remains to be seen if this individual was involved in the proceedings that led to the chase. The source, citing details from the Alhambra Police Department and California Highway Patrol, indicates that Valley Boulevard continued to be closed off as the matter underwent further investigation to unravel the full scope and causation of this devastating incident.
