FDNY Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced his resignation, which comes one day after Zohran Mamdani was elected as New York City's new mayor. Tucker’s resignation is set to take effect in December, FOX 5 New York reports.

The reasons for Tucker’s resignation have not been disclosed. His departure comes after a brief tenure as Fire Commissioner, having been appointed by Mayor Eric Adams in August. Tucker, who was raised in Manhattan, previously served as a special assistant to then-Queens District Attorney Richard Brown and later worked at T&M USA, a private security firm, as reported by FOX 5 New York.

In a statement, Tucker said, "Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job," expressing appreciation for the opportunity to lead what he called "the greatest fire department in the world," according to NBC New York. He also stated that he will ensure an "orderly transition" until his departure on December 19.

Mayor Adams recognized Tucker's leadership, stating he "led the Fire Department of the City of New York with courage, passion, and a sincere dedication to public safety," as per FOX 5 New York. The Mayor also said the city is "incredibly grateful for Commissioner Tucker's service and look forward to seeing what he'll do next." After resigning, Tucker plans to return to T&M, where he previously worked.

The responsibility of appointing a new FDNY commissioner now falls to Mayor-elect Mamdani. With his term beginning on January 1, 2026, an interim acting fire commissioner is expected to be appointed until a permanent selection is made.
