In a sobering verdict handed down last week, former Nevada County resident Mark Steven Brocke was found guilty on all seven felony counts of child sexual abuse. The Nevada County District Attorney's Office reported that the jurors unanimously agreed upon the culpability of the accused, who now faces a potential life sentence.

Testimonies provided by the two named victims were central to securing the conviction. Now in their mid-20s and early 30s, they vividly recollected the abuses perpetrated by Brocke when they were under 14. Their courage in speaking out was instrumental in painting a clear picture of the crimes, which often occurred in isolation without others around who could intervene.

The gravity of the case was underscored by Judge B. Scott Thomsen's acknowledgment of aggravating factors, citing great violence and the exploitative betrayal of trust. The defendant was also recognized as a rising threat due to the progressive severity of his crimes, including a prior related conviction from 2006.

Helenaz Hill, the Supervising Deputy District Attorney, successfully marshaled the case against Brocke, with the investigation led by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Brocke, whose crimes spanned deceit and manipulation against the especially vulnerable, now faces a maximum of 115 years to life in prison. The sentencing is set for December 19, 2025.

Expressing a sense of resolution on behalf of the prosecution, District Attorney Wilson hailed the conscientiousness of the jury: "District Attorney Wilson expresses gratitude to the jurors for their service, their careful attention, and their commitment to the rule of law," as per the official statement on social media.
