In a late-night collision that has left a community mourning, a 33-year-old Fort White woman lost her life after a devastating head-on crash in Columbia County, News4Jax reported. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. on State Road 47 yesterday; the woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the other driver, a 23-year-old man from Lake City, was left in critical condition.
According to the FHP via a news release obtained by Action News Jax, both drivers were found to be without seatbelts at the time of the crash, this, despite ongoing campaigns and laws advocating for their use to protect lives in such tragic circmstances. The woman was headed southbound when her sedan collided with the northbound vehicle driven by the young man; the news release did not specify whether conditions or impairment played a role in the event, but an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause.
In an effort to shed light on the details of the crash, the FHP has been transparent about the ongoing investigation, but as of now, the factors leading up to the collision remain a matter of speculation, First Coast News reports. The local community has been alerted to expect possible delays in the area as the investigation continues, with State Road 47 serving as a main thoroughfare for the surrounding residents.
