The Franklin Police Department has begun its annual Holiday Toy Drive, with this year's event resonating with the poignant tribute to three special lives. Community members are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys for children and teenagers at Police Headquarters, located at 900 Columbia Ave., from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., until December 18, according to an announcement on the Franklin city website.
Traditionally, the toy drive has been a tribute to Kristi Clark and her 10-year-old son, Carter Oakley, who were killed in a tragic accident in 2015 after stopping to help strangers on I-65. Adding to the touching narrative this year, Brad Lewis, Kristi’s father, recently passed away after his fight with cancer and is remembered for his dedication to the toy drive, crafting wooden toy chests which served as both a vessel for the collected toys and a symbol of communal hope and goodwill.
In a statement obtained by the Franklin city website, Police Chief Deb Faulkner said, "Brad Lewis embodied the very spirit of this toy drive. Even through his own pain, he chose to be a light for others." Faulkner highlighted the legacy of altruism and kindness left by Kristi, Carter, and now Brad, urging the community to emulate their generosity this holiday season. The toy chests, filled with donations, will be earmarked for Franklin families in need of extra cheer.
