A major gas leak near Cypresswood Drive and Champion Forest Drive put the brakes on traffic Wednesday, shutting down all northbound lanes on Champion Forest Drive. Drivers were asked to steer clear while responders worked to secure the scene and evaluate the leak, as reported by Click2Houston.
Emergency crews respond
Klein Fire Department and constable deputies were on scene, according to Click2Houston. Crews closed the northbound lanes to assess the leak and secure the area as emergency personnel coordinated the response.
Traffic and detours
As Click2Houston noted, “drivers are urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes.” Emergency personnel redirected vehicles around the closure, squeezing northbound traffic through the Champion Forest corridor during peak travel hours.
Safety advice
If you smell natural gas or witness a leak, move to a safe location and call 911 immediately, according to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The agency advises notifying first responders and the pipeline operator so trained crews can handle the situation safely.
What’s next
Officials had not released details on the cause of the leak or a timeline for reopening the northbound lanes at the time of reporting. We’ll update with statements from Klein Fire Department, Harris County Precinct 4, or utility operators as they become available.
