As reported by the City of Round Rock's official news update, the Round Rock Fire Department took action after a gas line was struck during construction activities near Creek Bend Boulevard and Camino Del Verdes Place. Seven homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure while fire crews and Atmos Energy workers addressed the situation.
Hindered by weather conditions, the dispersal of the gas was slowed, necessitating expanded air monitoring and the help of Atmos Energy to build a bypass for the damaged gas line. Trying to find a way around, motorists have been advised to use Plantation Drive as Creek Bend Boulevard remains closed to traffic north of Old Settlers Boulevard. With the electric utility company Oncor switching off power in the vicinity to prevent any sparks that could ignite the gas, approximately 280 customers were left without electricity for an expected duration of up to two hours.
In order to manage the leak within the closed-loop system of the gas line, Atmos crew members undertook the task of strategically digging across multiple locations to redirect the gas flow. It has been stated that once the system is deemed safe, electricity will be restored to the affected areas. If there are any shifts in the prevailing conditions, the Round Rock Fire Department will proactively proceed with additional evacuations as necessary.
