In a unique twist on a national tradition, Georgia is set to pardon a turkey in anticipation of Thanksgiving. Yesterday, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the State Board of Pardons & Paroles, will host an event underscoring second chances and the pivotal role of agriculture in the state's economy. Commissioner Tyler J. Harper and Chairwoman Joyette Holmes are the key figures leading the ceremony, which will take place at the Commissioner's Ceremonial Office.
Tom the Turkey, a Red Bourbon raised on the Hodgkins family farm in Monroe County, will receive this year’s pardon. The event at 47 Trinity Ave SW highlights both the literal turkey pardon and its symbolic connection to the Board of Pardons & Paroles’ mission of offering people a fresh start.
According to a media advisory released by the GDA, "This event will highlight the State Board of Pardons & Parole's role of providing deserving Georgians with a second chance as well as the importance of agriculture to Georgia’s economy ahead of the holiday season." Pardon ceremonies are often laden with theatrics and symbolism, but Georgia's approach ties it back to the state’s foundations, recognizing the enduring impact of agricultural traditions and industries.
