Following a serious shooting in March 2024, that left a 62-year-old man injured, Daron Lontrell Nelson, age 26, has been sentenced to a prison term spanning nearly two decades. The event unfolded in Missouri, amid the bustle of downtown and the innocent backdrop of a children’s daycare, casting a stark contrast between childhood innocence and the grim realities of grown men settling grievances with bullets.
According to a report by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, a jury found Nelson guilty on multiple charges, namely first-degree assault of a special victim, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. It was on 23rd and Washington Avenue where the white Hyundai Sonata that Nelson was driving, pulled up and a concealed passenger discharged a firearm multiple times – hitting the older man in the upper back.
Surveillance footage from the daycare added to the evidence against Nelson, showing the vehicle in a hasty retreat from the scene. It was thanks to this evidence and the diligent real-time crime cameras that police were able to track down the Hyundai, and enforce a swift arrest of Nelson later that night. During a recorded interview, Nelson conceded to his role as the driver during the ill-fated shooting incident.
The case was marked by its brazen nature, occurring during a time when children were just meters away inside the daycare. "This intentional act of gun violence endangered not only the victim but also innocent children nearby," stated St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore, "The use of firearms to settle disputes has devastating consequences in our community, and this sentence reflects our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and protecting public safety in every neighborhood." A .40-caliber Glock pistol linked to the incident was also retrieved from Nelson's vehicle, as reported by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
