A 15-year-old girl waiting for a bus in Maili early Tuesday had a gun pointed at her and her cash taken, rattling neighbors and morning commuters. Police say the teen was not injured, but the suspects fled with the money before officers arrived.
What happened
Honolulu police say the robbery happened around 7:05 a.m. at a bus stop on Farrington Highway at St. Johns Road, when a white Kia sedan pulled up and several people got out and approached the girl. One of the males allegedly pulled a handgun and took cash from her backpack before the group sped off in the car, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Police response and tips
The Honolulu Police Department has opened an armed robbery investigation and is canvassing the area for witnesses. Investigators are asking anyone with information to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300, or to send an anonymous tip through the P3 Tips app, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
Transit safety concerns
The robbery comes during a stretch of bold daytime stickups that have unsettled Leeward Oahu residents this year. In July, men in ski masks allegedly robbed teens at gunpoint in Makakilo Park, a case that led authorities to warn about armed robberies targeting young people and transit riders, Hawaii News Now reported.
Victim and suspect descriptions
Police described the suspects as four males wearing black clothing and ski masks who left the scene in a white Kia. Investigators have not released the amount of money taken or additional suspect details. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the girl was not injured.
