A 40-year-old hang glider named Jonathan Warren was arrested yesterday after launching himself off the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and parachuting into Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn, authorities reported Monday. The incident attracted the attention of several 911 callers around 5 p.m., as reported by the NBC New York. The hang glider, who hails from Bedford-Stuyvesant, was charged with reckless endangerment and handed a ticket for a court appearance at a later date.
According to police, Warren was able to land safely in the park, where he was found and ultimately taken into custody nearly two hours after his daring leap from the bridge. The act of hang gliding off such structures is not only prohibited but also poses significant risks, leading to charge him with reckless endangerment. No injuries were reported in relation to the stunt, which brought an unlicensed aircraft, momentarily, into Brooklyn skies.
This was reported to be Warren's first arrest in New York City, based on information from the NY Daily News. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn, has been a site of fascination for thrill-seekers, although authorities continue to strictly enforce regulations to prevent unauthorized and potentially hazardous activities.
