The Kīlauea Roundabout at Kūhiō Highway and Kolo Road opened on Nov. 14 to improve traffic flow and safety, though some project work is still underway, according to HDOT.
According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Construction on the Kīlauea Roundabout began May 5 with a $14.3 million budget. Remaining work, including landscaping, striping, and signs, is expected by year’s end, with traffic counting systems planned for January 2026. HDOT thanked the community for their patience.
With the aim of facilitating smoother transitions at the roundabout, HDOT reminds drivers of essential guidelines. Motorists should approach the roundabout with reduced speed, give way to pedestrians at crosswalks, and only enter the circle when safe. In the roundabout, which operates in a counterclockwise direction, drivers must also signal before making their exit.
